The Vision of Escaflowne

Van

This anime series has been released for a long time, and I'm a bit ashamed to say that I have only recently (end of May, 2001) viewed the entire thing. I had a great epiphany when I first saw this, and while I was sucked in, not until now did I have enough money to buy it. A friend of ours showed me the first tape in 1999, and I fell in love with it. The animation was excellent, the characters engaging and believable, and the story out of this world.

To summarize, or not to summarize? Oh, well, what the heck. At least the first little bit.

Kanzaki Hitomi is your average high school student in Japan. She is a member of the track team, and she enjoys doing tarot card readings for her friends. She has a crush on a cute (well, I guess some would call him cute, I wouldn't) upperclassman named Amano, also a track team member. However, she is too shy to let him know. Her best friend tells her that Amano is leaving to go to England because of his father's job, so Hitomi decides to finally let him know. Before Amano leaves, Hitomi asks him to kiss her, if she is able to run 100 meters in 13 seconds. Amano agrees, but before she can finish her race, a pillar of light deposits a strange young man right in her path, and then does the same for a dragon, which it appears the young man must slay in order to become king. After he has done so, the pillar of light returns, yanking both Van Fanel (our young slayer) and Hitomi from Earth, and plunking them down in a bizarre world where Hitomi can see the Earth and moon in the sky. Van calls his world Gaea.

As I say, this is an excellent anime. For those of us who are utterly hopeless romantics, the ending . . . . "No spoilers!" I told myself firmly.

Anyway, if you'd like to find out more, go to my Links page and click on "Escaflowne". There are many fabulous pages out there on the web to this anime, and there are some that you really just shouldn't miss.

I should also tell you that, inspired by this series, I started writing fanfiction. "Oh, no," you groan, "anything but fanfiction!" Too bad for you, I've finished a lot of it. *grin*
